Whiteside Picnic Celebrates Three Year Project
District Governor Visits Ely Rotary
Chilly weather could not dampen the mood as three years of dedicated fundraising came to an end with the installation of the final set of benches and tables at Whiteside Park in this spring. The club celebrated completion of the $27,000 project with a brats and burgers picnic on May 30, attended by Rotarians and Ely's Mayor.
The park project spanned the terms of three club presidents shown above, (right to left) Joe Owens 2011-12, Betsy Leustek 2009-10, and Ward Nelson 2010-11, with Ely Mayor Roger Skraba.
The Benches, Tables and Bike Racks are used by young and old nearly every day as shown in these pictures from 2011.
Enthusiastic bidders turned out for a fun evening of BBQ, wings, and auction action at the Grand Ely Lodge on August 14. By evenings' end the Silent Auction, Live Bidding and Raffles had raised over $16,000 for the club to use for local projects. First on the list is $6,000 that will go toward furniture for the new Ely Library this fall.
A new feature this year were vacation packages for Key West and Arizona - the result of trades between Rotary Clubs. We are hoping to bring some visitors from those locations to enjoy Ely next August, while our winning bidders relax in Florida and Green Valley this spring.

Two Thousand Cranes in Ely
Joany and RYLA grad Karen made a trip to Ely's Washington Elementary in March, presenting Ryan's Wells Project and describing how Ely Rotary would team with the kids to turn paper cranes into a donation to provide safe water.
With rapt faces in the auditorium to busy hands and smiling concentration, the kids jumped into constructing cranes, ably assisted by Rotarians, teachers, and Junior Rotarians Janelle and Sara.
The Gavel is Passed:
On June 25 Diane Loughery bowed out as President and Jeff Sundell assumed the office. Jeff's new Board Members will be announced in early July and everyone in the club will be gearing up to raise money at our 25th Anniversary Auction for a productive year. In addition to funding our annual assortment of scholarships and support for community and international programs, the club has decided to dedicate $6,000 toward furniture for the new Ely Library, opening in November.
