Local Youth Programs
Ely Rotary is committed to improving the health and welfare in our local community. Our activities are a mix of fundraising to provide financial support and hands-on service. Here are some highlights of recent projects:
Each year we recognize a dozen outstanding seniors from Ely Memorial High School by designating them as Junior Rotarians. Through the year they take turns attending our meetings and learning about Rotary and then, in May, we salute them as they graduate.
Dictionaries for Second Graders
Second graders in both Babbitt and Ely schools are given personal dictionaries in an effort to encourage learning.
We customarily send two high school students to the Rotary Young Leaders Awards camp at Crookston, where they participate in confidence building, concensus making and leadership activities.
Annual Ely Rotary Speech Meet Photo
We are very proud of the Ely Memorial High School Speech Team and are glad to sponsor their activities and help them host a meet.
Each year our club awards $2,500 in scholarships to graduating seniors.
In 2016 our club was approached by a group of elementary students who wanted to place a "Buddy Bench" in their playground. The idea is that any child who feels the need of friendship or support can go sit on the bench and other kids can sit down with them to help. We liked the concept and their impressive presentation and have partnered with Zup's Groceries to provide a bench for them at Washington Elementary School.
4-Way Test Essay Contest
Students in Ely are encouraged to participate in this essay contest and have done some really fine work.
Support for Other Youth Programs
We also support the high school yearbook, the fall musical and Grad Night with donations.
