Community Projects

Ely Rotary is committed to improving health and welfare in our local community. Our activities are a mix of fundraising to provide financial support and hands-on service.  Here are some highlights of recent projects:

Penny Jars to Support the Food Shelf
Throughout the summer season our Penny Jars sit on merchants' counters, collecting change that will provide support for Ely's Food Shelf and buy milk for undernourished children at a school in the Philippines. Also, members serve as volunteers at the Food Shelf.

Benches, Tables, Bike Racks & Trashcans
Beginning in 2011, we have purchased park benches, tables, trashcans and bike racks for Whiteside Park, the Winton children's playground, Ely's new Veterans' Memorial, and across from the Senior Center.  In 2016 we added trash receptacles in tourist areas of town. Veterans Memorial benches were installed Spring 2017.

Library Computer Tables and Chairs
In 2015 we donated $6,000 to the new Ely Library to provide furnishings for the client-use computers.

Habitat Build Days
Habitat for Humanity has come to Ely and Rotarians turned out to help work on some of the interior studs and the exterior fascia at one of the build sites.
Voter Forums
Rotary is  not a political organization, but we are vitally concerned with the election of good men and women to public office.  We partner with AAUW to sponsor voter forums for local, state and national elections.
Road Clean-up
Twice each year we hike along a stretch of Highway 1, cleaning up debris and picking up trash.
Ely Marathon Water Station
In 2015 Ely hosted its first marathon and Rotarians were there to cheer on the runners and hand out water and fruit at one of the support stations, returning to help again in 2016.
ECR Garden Shed
The Ely Community Resource gardeners have a safe place to store their tools and materials thanks to our donation of a shed in 2012.  In addition, we support their efforts with monetary donations each year.
Support For Local Causes
We traditionally donate funds to a variety of local projects, including the high school yearbook, the fall musical and Grad Night, as well as CAPP and the city's Winter Festival.  Additional donations are going to Ely Music Boosters, Northern Lakes Arts Association and Vermillion Country School.
Global Projects

Rotary has made a commitment to worldwide eradication of Polio.  The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has joined us in this effort and we are "This Close" to our goal.
Ely Rotary supports the Polio Plus campaign with a $2000 donation each year and with awareness campaigns - think "purple pinkies" - at schools and in town.

Spearheaded by our own Diane Loughery, Ely Rotary co-ops with other clubs in District 5580 to provide a means of producing fresh water for families in Haiti.  We also contribute to Ryan's Wells, another water project.

Wherever disaster strikes and people need shelter, you will probably find Rotary Shelter Boxes.  When the earthquakes struck Nepal in 2015, our club teamed up with a Duluth club to send three Shelter Boxes.

Part of the money collected in our Penny Jars goes to a school in the Philippine Islands to provide milk for undernourished students.
