Todd Heiman welcomed the group today. He introduced Patti Banks on Zoom, CEO of Ely Bloomenson Community Hospital, a former Ely Rotarian whose name will be submitted next Monday, August 2nd at the Board meeting. He thanked everyone involved in setting up the booth at the Blueberry/Art Festival under Lisa Ledel's leadership. With the destruction of the booth we will need to discuss how to pay for the borrowed tent, and we need to sell raffle tickets that went unsold due to the cancellation. He showed the drink coupons that Rotarians can pay for and distribute to contributors and friends to encourage them to get to the Auction.
Topics for Today - Mary Batinich, Board member of the Lake Vermilion Cultural Center in Tower and owner of the B&B in Soudan.
Mary gave us a spirited overview of the restored Episcopal Church on the west side of Tower that we all see in its phases of construction as we drive through Tower. The church was moved in 2016 from its location one street over and is being restored as a cultural center. It dates back to 1888 and was designed by Cass Gilbert and will become a beautiful venue for various events when completed with just four of eleven stained glass windows currently installed. Midsummer in Norway 2021 will be the theme of their fundraiser on Saturday, August 28th.
Mary also talked about her career as a travel agent, taking tours around the world for many years. She has purchased and is restoring the former hospital in Soudan across from the Soudan's Only Store. She invited us all to stop and visit for a tour.
Mary is a great addition to our Vermilion Range community.
