Club Information

Todd Heiman welcomed the club members and updated the membership on the Board meeting this past Monday. Some of the important decisions made to not request an International Student until 2022/23 school year when we can work to have a host family. We are beginning projects provide benches for the Chamber of Commerce, ECR at the children's garden, and perhaps more for the City of Ely. Lisa Ledel is organizing our booth to sell raffle tickets at the Blueberry Festival. He also thanked the Board for its great work and camaraderie, and chose not to identify a "Rotarian of the Year" since so many members overall have worked so hard to keep our club functioning and meeting.

Guest for Today:

Ely's Mayor Chuck Novak was the presenter, reminding us of our "Quirky City in a beautiful setting". Despite our obvious divisions on many issues, we work well together and welcome our guests, summer residents, and new arrivals. We are fortunate to be in such a safe environment with all that is going on around us.

He gave us an overview of our positive relationship with the legislature and our local representatives and how that has helped to fund many improvements in the recent past. He spoke of the Trailhead for ATV's, snowmobiles, and Mesabi Bike Trail, the mountain bike trails at Hidden Valley, and how we are taking advantage of our location.

He also reviewed all of the various street and infrastructure projects going on right now in the City, as well as in the region. Projects on the horizon include a major upgrade to the wastewater treatment plant that desperately needs funding from the State of Minnesota, as well as upgrades currently being completed at the VA Clinic and Airport.

A very positive and upbeat report on the State of the City of Ely.
